The society formed as the Union Debating Society, changing its name to the Adelphian Debating Society at its second meeting. For the weekly meetings, the Executive Committee prepared a topic for debate, appointed two members on the Affirmative and two on the Negative, as well as three members to judge the debate. The celebration of the 150th anniversary of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dartmouth College Case was held on April 9, 1969, in the Court of Claims, Washington, D.C.; the celebration also commemorated the career of Daniel Webster, the advocate who defended the case before the Supreme Court.
